Seven Things That Made Me Smile This Week

Summer is officially over and, although I am more than ready for autumn, I did enjoy making the most of my final week of the summer break. If I'm totally honest, while this week has been more of a relaxing Grey's Anatomy fest than anything else, I've also been enjoying getting back into a good food, work and exercise routine and, generally, it's been the perfect last week of summer. So, in my final week of rest and relaxation, here are some of my highlights.

Blackberry picking. Since getting home from my travels, I've been fully embracing the autumn spirit  and one of my all time favourite autumnal activities has to be blackberry picking. So, in the spirit of autumn, Jay and I put on our coats and headed out for a rainy morning of blackberry picking. Aside from just being fun, our berry picking definitely paid off because we came home with over 1kg of delicious blackberries!

Bake Off. This week was definitely one of my favourites of the year because it brought with it the start of the new season of my favourite show, The Great British Bake Off. Aside from being the worlds greatest excuse to eat all the cake, Bake Off just feels like autumn to me and I love it.

Blackberry and apple crumble. In the spirit of both blackberry picking and Bake Off, this week seemed like the ideal week for a sweet, cinnamony apple and blackberry crumble. It might be simple but a homemade apple and blackberry crumble with Alpro custard, a cuppa and an episode of Bake Off sounds like perfection to me!

Book signing. This Sunday, Jay and I had a totally free schedule, so when we noticed that Murr from Impractical Jokers was at our local bookshop for a signing for his new novel, we thought 'what the heck' and headed down to Waterstones. It definitely wasn't what I thought I'd be doing with my Sunday, but it was a pretty fun excursion that came with a new signed book so, it was a pretty good Sunday, if you ask me!

Jam tarts. After my crumble, I still had plenty of blackberries leftover so I decided to try my hand at some blackberry jam tarts and, not to toot my own horn but, I seriously outdid myself! It was my first attempt at homemade vegan shortcrust pastry and, after seeing how well the jam tarts went down, I'm going to be trying out a whole lot more tarts and pies in the coming weeks.

Book shopping. Since getting back from Italy last week, I've been to Waterstones three times... THREE. And while my lack of self-control in the book shop may be laughable, I did manage to pick up a few beautiful books to add to my shelves. But seriously, September has to be a book shop free month because my bank account really can't take another book haul for a while!

September. While blackberries, bake off and cosy days are all surefire signs of impending autumn, nothing quite feels as autumnal as the start of September. As soon as September hits, you'd better believe my coats are coming out, the candles are being lit and I will be basking in the glory that is autumn, until it's time to start preparing for Christmas, that is!

What made you smile this week?

    1. Thanks! It's definitely a great way to focus on the best parts of my week! Blackberry picking is so fun but I'd love to go to an orchard! We have a pear tree in our garden but an apple tree would be amazing!:)
