Seven Things That Made Me Smile This Week

Sunday, March 11, 2018

Tiredness hit me hard this week but luckily, as it's been the first week in a while that I've not had a deadline to work towards so I've definitely been taking the chance to fit in all the early nights after a few weeks of back to back essays. I've also been soaking up some sun and enjoying temperatures that actually go above 10 degrees - exciting, right?! All in all, this has been one of those slow, 'take it easy' weeks that we all need once in a while, so here are some of the things that made me smile on my re-set week.

Trumpet. This week I had to read Jackie Kay's Trumpet for one of my classes at uni and I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Although I love reading, I've had a bit of an up and down relationship with my English Literature degree and there has been a lot of content that I haven't enjoyed reading, so when I get to analyse a novel that I really love, I feel so grateful!

Blueberry Muffin Nakd Bars. Thanks to Instagram, I've been lusting after the new Blueberry Muffin Nakd Bar for a couple of months now, so I just had to snap up a box when I spotted them in my local supermarket this week. As always, I was ridiculously impressed with how much flavour Nakd packs into their bars with such a minimal ingredient list and the blueberry muffin bar tasted bloomin' amazing! The flavour was reminiscent of a Nutrigrain Bar and was strangely nostalgic for me, but I'm fairly confident that Blueberry Muffin might have overtaken Cherry Bakewell as my favourite Nakd Bar flavour - it was that good.

Holiday planning. When it comes to booking holidays, Jay and I are terrible, we can never settle on a location and we almost always leave booking everything to the very last minute. But this year, we're hoping to travel around Europe a little more and, in an effort to be a little more organised with our travels, we surprised ourselves by actually booking something this week. So far we've planned for a week in Ljubljana, Slovenia - there's plenty of other places we want to see along the way but, hey, it's a start!

Flexibility. Trust me when I say that I am probably one of the least flexible people you will ever meet, it's kind of ridiculous. Recently, I've been trying to make more of an effort to stretch regularly and try and gain at least some level of flexibility and it's paying off! Gaining flexibility is definitely a slow process, but I'm definitely seeing progress and enjoying being just a little more stretchy.

Surprise snow days. After dealing with 'the beast from the east' last week, I was so happy to some higher temperatures and the start of spring this week. As the kind of person who is always cold, I'd been jumping for joy that we'd finally seen the last of winter so it's safe to say that I was more than a little surprised to wake up to heavy snow on Thursday morning. The snow seemed to come out of nowhere and it came fast, it was so unexpected that I got another snow day! And, best of all, the sun made a comeback by the afternoon and the snow was all gone by the evening, so I got the best of both seasons. But, seriously, if spring could actually stick around this time, that would be great.

Pret Coconut Hot Chocolates. Back in autumn, Pret Coconut Hot Chocolates were my jam, I was treating myself to at least one a week but, let's be real, it was usually more than that! Recently, I've been doing my bank account a favour and not going to coffee shops quite so often, but thanks to the snow day, Jay and I decided to head into town to do our Mother's Day shopping and, given the terrible weather, I thought it would be rude not to pick up a coconut hot chocolate, ammiright or ammiright?! And let me tell you, I made a good decision because it tasted ah-may-zing.

Cycling. Last week's snow meant that we were trapped inside for most of the weekend, so getting out for a ride this weekend felt even better. It was grey and drizzly, but it wasn't cold and it felt so good to enjoy some outdoor exercise again. Warm weather, I'm ready for you!
