Seven Things That Made Me Smile This Week

University started back this week after, what felt like, a lifetime off! My summer break was actually only six weeks rather than the usual three months as I work in a primary school, but after a very long break from classes, I'm glad to be back! I'm already feeling very busy and as this is my final year, there's a lot of dissertation work to be done but I'm really trying to make the most of (what may be) my final year in education... ever! Believe it or not, I did manage to find some free time between classes and work so here are some of the things that have been making me smile this week:

- Learning German. I've been learning German for a couple of years now and I love having an academic focus outside of English Literature because I love learning, but sometimes it's nice to have a break from books! One of my option modules this semester is a German class and I'm already loving it as I feel like I progress so much quicker in a class than when I'm just practising on my own at home.

- Pre-lecture hot chocolates. The temperature has definitely started to drop this week so my walks to university have been more than a little bit chilly. In an effort to put a positive spin on the weather, I've been using the cold and rain as an excuse to treat myself to a soy hot chocolate on my way in to classes and if that doesn't motivate me to go to lectures, I don't know what will!

- Fresh figs. I may have been living under a rock, but until this week, I'd never tried a fresh fig. I've been seeing figs all over my Instagram feed lately, so I decided to pick some up in this week's shopping. I genuinely struggled to believe that they were actually a fruit as they were so sweet and almost jam like so they made the perfect seasonal addition to my morning oats.

- Saturday afternoon baking. Since being back at work, I've not had much time for any complicated or creative cooking during the week. I really miss being creative in the kitchen when I'm short of time, so I try to spend a couple of hours making something delicious every Saturday afternoon which is the perfect way to unwind after, what is usually, a very busy Saturday morning. This week I took on pretzels and banana bread, delicious.

- Home Sense. I've heard a lot of good things about Home Sense recently, and after finally hopping on the bandwagon this weekend, I can see why. There were so many things I wanted to buy and, as a mug addict, I really had to exercise my self control when looking at kitchenware. I did treat myself to two pumpkin scented autumnal candles as well as a new metal water bottle but I actually managed to be quite restrained in my spending, this time, but I can guarantee I'll be back before long!

- Cinnamon lattes. Jay and I went for another Saturday morning walk this weekend, and while I love getting outside whilst it's still quiet to enjoy a crisp, autumnal morning, leaving the house before 7am means that our walks are pretty cold. Luckily, I had my KeepCup handy so we made a Starbucks pitstop on the way home for an almond milk cinnamon latte to enjoy alongside a big bowl of oats at home.

- New jumpers. I always seem to find the nicest clothes when I'm not looking for them so, naturally, when I was shopping for my sister's birthday present this weekend, I came across the nicest cable knit jumper in Top Shop. It looks and feels so cosy and, lets be honest, a wardrobe can never have too many cosy jumpers in Autumn.

As a bit of a creature of habit, I'm so glad to finally be back at work and university as I can feel myself settling back into a nice routine which always helps me to be more productive! What's been making you smile this week?

  2. I only recently discovered Home Sense too and I'm so glad I did! I feel like my eyes have been opened to a whole new world of interiors! I've also loved seeing all the new jumpers that are on the market. Sadly, I'm trying to save money, so spending has been kept to a minimum, but there's so many lovely ones out there.
