Seven Things That Made Me Smile This Week

Sunday, August 13, 2017

Getting back from a holiday always makes me realise how much of a home bird I am, and settling back into normality at home this week after a lovely break in Germany has prompted me to think about how much I have to be grateful for - and trust me there's a lot! It can never hurt to focus on the great things in your life, so I've started to note down some 'daily gratitudes' every evening - here's a few of the simple things that made me smile this week.

1. Cappuccinos. Being from Yorkshire, I'm usually a tea person through and through, but when I'm at a cafe, I usually opt for a coffee and thanks to travelling, I've been hitting up a few more cafe's recently and have a new found appreciation for frothy almond milk cappuccinos, especially with brown sugar and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top.

2. New mugs. The only thing better than a nice, hot drink, is a hot drink served in a cute mug, and I seemed to have acquired quite a few this week. Having brought back Munich and Berlin Starbucks mugs from Germany, I also managed to find a gorgeous gold speckled mug in Anthropologie as well as ordering a new KeepCup. I may or may not have a slight addiction, but tea just tastes so much sweeter in a nice mug.

3. (Very late) spring cleaning. Jay and I decided to have a little re-vamp of our bedroom this week to make room for a new desk, and in the process, we managed to get rid of so much clutter so our room feels so much bigger and clearer now.

4. Soup and sourdough. Since getting back from holiday, I've been totally embracing the cloudy, rainy and slightly chilly weather of Northern England. It's been so grey that I've been able to brush over the fact that it's technically still the middle of Summer and instead, I've been heating up some soup, toasting some M&S sourdough bread and enjoying a cup of tea whilst pretending that Autumn has arrived early.

5. Candles. Having re-organised our room and heated up some soup, the only thing missing was my favourite candle. Adding to the Autumnal feeling I've been loving this week, the gingerbread maple Yankee Candle has been the perfect addition to cosy evenings.

6. Getting in the kitchen. I enjoyed a lot of good food in Germany, but I definitely missed cooking for myself. Simple as it sounds, all I wanted when we got home was toast, porridge and (of course) pasta and veg. So I've been making the most of the kitchen this week and making all of our favourite meals as well as trialling a few new recipes.

7. Getting back in the gym. Okay, I might not have actually smiled during this one because, lets be honest, you can't trust anyone who still manages to smile through the sweat (and tears) of the stair master. But after taking nearly two weeks away from the gym whilst on holiday, I've been so glad to get back into my usual routine.

This has definitely been a week of appreciating the simple things and just loving everyday life. What made you smile this week?
